What is Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes excess abdominal skin and fat. The surgeon may also bring together separated or weakened abdominal muscles when appropriate. It can be considered after pregnancy or substantial weight changes. The operation leaves a permanent scar, generally placed low on the abdomen; a full tummy tuck may also involve a scar around the navel. The exact pattern depends on the amount and location of skin excess.

Who may be a suitable candidate?

Assessment focuses on your skin excess, abdominal wall, general health and expectations. Stable weight and an achievable recovery plan are important. Nicotine use and some medical conditions may increase healing problems. Additional treatment or revision surgery can sometimes be necessary.

What results can you expect?

A tummy tuck can change abdominal shape, but it is not a weight-loss operation. It does not remove every stretch mark: only marks within skin that is removed may disappear. Your surgeon should explain where scars will lie and which concerns the proposed operation will leave unchanged.
